"Recently, I have come to realize that my love of
music was really a gift to me from my family. My
mother, a one-room school teacher, would sing her
classroom songs with me daily. My aunt and I sang
and played the piano together as she prepared for
each church service. My grandmother played
recordings of sacred music all day long to which I
danced and danced behind closed doors. (She did not
think it was entirely appropriate.) My father drove
me to piano lessons every Saturday - an hour's drive
there and an hour's drive back home again. His
instrument was the stereo, and he loved Glenn
Miller, Pete Fountain and Herb Albert & The Tijuana
Brass. Every time he played it he would smile and
say, "Don't you just love this music, Terri?" I
don't believe I had any extraordinary talent for
music but I did have extraordinary exposure to
music.
Sadly, many children today do not make music with
their family even when music is within earshot every
waking moment. Most children and adults are
passively listening but not actively engaged in
making the music. And that is why only 50% of
children entering school today can carry a tune or
keep a beat. And when they realize they can't do it,
they back off, become shy and say things like "It's
not my thing...I don't like it...it's too hard," and
then the window of opportunity for learning is lost.
I believe that every child can learn to sing in tune
and keep a beat - just like any child can learn to
speak Chinese or Russian or any language! You gotta
use it or you'll lose it! I want every child to be
able to enjoy music. Not only is it a universal
language, a simple joy, a benefit to the mind, the
spirit, the emotions, and the health of the body,
but it's also fun!
The Music Together approach of educating the parent
to play with and alongside their children really
works! The informal setting where a child can
explore and learn on his own by watching his mom or
dad or special care-giver in a playful way is the
optimum environment for learning at these young ages
(0 to 4). I am so delighted to have discovered this
program. I thoroughly enjoy every class, every
parent and every child.
Music For Young Children is the best introduction to
formal music lessons that I have ever seen. It's
comprehensive, it's fun and it works."
